About the Study

[one_half]
You may qualify for this study if you have been diagnosed with Gout and have or have had heart disease or blood circulation problems and are at least 50 years of age. Gout patients have attacks of arthritis (also referred to as flares) and can get other medical problems. These include tophi, which are collections of urate that can form lumps in the skin, and kidney stones. Patients with gout also have an increased chance of getting problems affecting the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and metabolism.

Hyperuricemia that causes gout can be treated with drugs that lower the level of urate in the blood (“urate lowering therapy”). These include febuxostat and allopurinol.

In some of the earlier studies done with febuxostat and allopurinol the patients who were treated with febuxostat had a higher rate of complications involving the heart and blood vessels. These studies were relatively short and did not have enough patients to be sure whether this just happened by chance or whether febuxostat really does cause more heart problems. On the other hand some other studies have suggested that having a high urate level may also be bad for the heart and blood vessels, and it’s possible that urate lowering therapy may help reduce this.

Your participation will last a minimum of 78 months (which equals 6½ years) and a maximum of 126 months (10½ years), and include between 10 to 20 visits to the study center in addition to between 22 to 38 telephone calls (one every other month).

Time and travel compensation is provided to all qualified participants.
